IDSA Asian Strategic Review 2007
S.D. Muni
This volume examines strategic developments across Asia and is organised into four sections. It begins with international security issues identified as being of immediate relevance to India's strategic interests. These include India's responses to global energy security challenges, the resurgence of Russia, emerging military technologies and their security implications for India, the global war on terror, and issues surrounding the nuclear non-proliferation regime.
The remaining three sections provide in-depth analyses of major developments in South Asia, East Asia, and West and Central Asia, covering India's immediate and extended strategic neighbourhood. Topics include the evolving India–United States partnership, changes in Sino-Indian and Sino-Japanese relations, the India–Pakistan peace process, and the challenges of institutionalising democracy in Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan. The volume also addresses ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, East Asia's economic dynamism and political changes, North Korea's nuclear brinkmanship, Iran's nuclear programme, Israel–Palestine relations and the role of major powers in Central Asia.
The book includes a statistical appendix containing defence- and conflict-related data for important countries in Asia.
