About the Book
Institutional Framework for Collection of Statistics on Trade in Services: Four Pilot Surveys on Trade in Audiovisual, Logistics, Professional and Telecommunication Services by Bhavook Bhardwaj, Tanu M. Goyal, Arpita Mukherjee, and Raj Kumar Shahi provides a comprehensive examination of the challenges and opportunities involved in developing a reliable institutional framework for collecting statistics on India's international trade in services.
The services sector is the largest contributor to India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and plays an increasingly important role in economic growth, international trade, foreign investment, and employment. Despite its growing significance, India has faced challenges in establishing a comprehensive and reliable system for collecting data on international trade in services.
The book presents the findings of four pilot surveys conducted by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) for the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S). These surveys examine trade in four important services sectors: audiovisual, logistics, professional, and telecommunications services.
The study evaluates existing institutional and regulatory frameworks for collecting trade in services data, examines international practices, and identifies challenges affecting the availability and accuracy of statistical information.
Drawing on the findings of the pilot surveys and global best practices, the report offers policy recommendations for strengthening India's trade in services database and developing an effective institutional and regulatory framework.
