Migration, Development and Poverty Reduction in Asia

International Organization for Migration (IOM)

This volume brings together papers presented at the Regional Conference on Migration and Development in Asia, held in Lanzhou, China, from 14–16 March 2005. Hosted by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference was organised by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

While growing attention has been given to the role of migration in promoting development, the focus has largely been on international migration, with internal migration receiving comparatively less attention. This book highlights the importance of internal migration as a policy area and explores ways to enhance its contribution to poverty reduction and development.

The volume examines strategies for maximising the benefits of internal migration while ensuring that migrants have decent working conditions and access to essential health and social services.
