Raganjli: Popular and Uncommon Ragas (Second Edition)
Gurbux Singh
Raganjli: Popular and Uncommon Ragas (Second Edition) by Gurbux Singh is a comprehensive exploration of popular and lesser-known ragas of North Indian classical music.
The book brings together the author's extensive knowledge, practical experience, and dedicated research into Indian classical music. It provides clear guidelines and explanations that help readers, students, and vocalists understand the characteristics and structures of different ragas.
Featuring more than 160 ragas and over 350 musical compositions (bandishes), this second edition presents a remarkable collection of traditional and uncommon musical forms. The compositions are carefully selected and arranged according to their appropriate rhythm (laya), rhythmic cycles (taal), and emotional expression (bhava), making even intricate musical structures easier to understand and appreciate.
A distinctive feature of the book is its inclusion of musical compositions based on the devotional writings of saints such as Bhagat Kabir, Namdev, Ravidas, and Baba Farid, along with compositions drawn from Sikh scriptures.
Raganjli serves as a valuable reference for students, teachers, performers, researchers, and enthusiasts of Hindustani classical music who wish to explore the richness and diversity of the raga tradition.
