Retail in India
Mathew Joseph and Nirupama Soundararajan
The entry of large corporate houses into India's retail sector has generated considerable debate. This study finds that traditional and organised retail can coexist and achieve rapid, sustained growth in the coming years.
Based on an extensive survey of stakeholders and a review of international experience, particularly in emerging economies relevant to India, the book examines the impact of organised retail on traditional retailers, consumers, farmers and manufacturers. It highlights how traditional retailers are responding to competition through improved business practices and technology upgradation, while consumers and farmers stand to gain from the growth of organised retail.
The study argues that public policy should help create a level playing field for traditional retailers. It presents specific policy recommendations for regulating interactions between large retailers and small suppliers, strengthening traditional retailers' competitive response and supporting the modernisation of the retail sector.
